A series of volleyball matches played within the Island and the game was popularized in a great extent. The Federation of Sri Lanka Volleyball was formed on the 04th of September, 1951and consequently the volleyball received an official recognition. Sir Richard Aluvihara was the first President of the Federation of Sri Lanka Volleyball.
Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation (SLVF) is the main governing body of Volleyball in Sri Lanka, where volleyball is its national sport. The game of volleyball was introduced to Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) in 1916 by Mr. R. W. Camack, then Director of Physical Education at the Colombo Y.M.C.A. The Federation is built on 99 affiliated organizations and Managed by an honorary Committee of 25 members.

Soccer was to be organized by Peradeniya, volleyball by Vidyodaya, and wrestling by Vidyalankara. This event was held and it was a great success though no trophies were awarded. The Physical Education staffs of the universities then decided to continue building up and developing the project and appointed Mr. Lesley Handunge and Mr. K.L.F. Wijedasa as convener and secretary respectively.
